In Attack of the Monsters, two children get into a flying saucer and end up on the other side of the sun. Once there, they dream of donuts and milk and a heroic giant turtle named Gamera. The beautiful space women on the saucer want to eat their brains. Yes, it’s a children’s movie!

Attack of the Monsters (1969) starring Gamera

Review

First of all, Gamera vs. Guiron, also known as Attack of the Monsters, is a children’s movie, and should be taken as such. Adults will watch it to mock some of the silliness. For instance, the scene with Gamera launching himself off “parallel bars” to attack Guiron has been mocked mercilessly on MST3K among other places. And with good reason.

But, children will enjoy it, which is the purpose of the film. Is it high art? Of course not. Is it better than some of the cartoons being cranked out for children today? Sadly, yes. So, grab some popcorn, enjoy the silliness.

Editorial review of Attack of the Monsters courtesy of Amazon.com

Gamera vs. Guiron, also known as Attack of the Monsters, is a 1969 daikaiju eiga (giant-monster movie), the fifth entry in the Gamera series. It was one of five Gamera films to be featured as episodes of movie-mocking television show Mystery Science Theater 3000; the show notably focused on Gamera’s apparent gymnastic skills for humor. This film’s antagonist, Guiron (named for “guillotine”), is a giant quadrupedal dinosaur-like monster with a head shaped like a long knife, which is 100 times harder than diamond. Along the knife is a hole that shoots small magnetic shuriken. It also has the ability to fly.
