13 Ghosts (1960) by William Castle

The 1960 version of 13 Ghosts is a classic B-movie horror film by William Castle — it has little relationship to the 2001 remake,  Thir13en Ghosts, starring Tony Shalhoub. For one thing,  13 Ghosts is actually enjoyable to watch 🙂

Synopsis of  13 Ghosts

Reclusive occult expert Dr. Plato Zorba has died, leaving his furnished mansion to his penniless nephew Cyrus and his family — along with the ghosts that he’s managed to collect, who seemingly are out to kill someone in the house.

Scared Stiff (1953) starring Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Lizbeth Scott, Carmen Miranda

Scared Stiff is a remake of the Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard comedy, The Ghost Breakers, with Dean Martin as Larry Todd, a singer who is falsely accused of murder (“You murdered a perfect stranger?” “Nobody’s perfect.”). On the run from the law, he’s accompanied by his friend Myron M. Mertz (Jerry Lewis).  On the lam, they run into Mary Caroll (Lizabeth Scott), who has inherited a haunted castle from her father, where the three of them go.  Once there the “ghost” makes his appearance, Dean sings, Jerry does slapstick — including an imitation of their co-star, Carmen Miranda.

Thir13en Ghosts

Thir13en Ghosts (2001) starring Tony Shalhoub, Shannon Elizabeth, F. Murray Abraham

The 2001 film, Thirteen Ghosts, is a remake of the 1960 William Castle film, 13 Ghosts. The two films have the following in common:

  • A penniless family inherits a mansion from a deceased, eccentric relative
  • The mansion contains over a dozen ghosts
  • The ghosts can only be seen with special glasses

That’s pretty much it.
