Scream of the Wolf (1974) starring Peter Graves, Clint Walker,
In Scream of the Wolf, a writer tries to convince a big-game hunter to come out of retirement. He needs his help to help track down a killer wolf. Some begin to suspect that it isn’t a wolf but an animal that can take human form.
My wife and I recently finished binge watching the original Dark Shadows television series by Dan Curtis on Amazon Prime. We then stumbled across several movies of the week films by him, which led us to Scream of the Wolf. Despite being a “movie of the week,” it’s a very enjoyable film, with good acting and fast pace. And a hook: Is there a werewolf killing people? Or something natural — but just as deadly?
Cast of characters
- Peter Graves (Red Planet Mars) – John Weatherby. The adventure writer and former hunter who gets pulled into the murder investigation. He seeks the help of his old friend Byron, a great hunter, to catch the wolf. But Byron’s very unwilling …
- Clint Walker (The Dirty Dozen) – Byron Douglas. Byron is a world-famous hunter. However, he has no interest in helping the authorities. Why is quite a mystery. He comes off as a loner. He appears almost antisocial. Even so, he has no reason that he can give his old friend John as to why he won’t help.
- Jo Ann Pflug (MASH) – Sandy Miller. John’s girlfriend, who becomes absolutely convinced that the murders are committed by … a werewolf. And further convinced that it’s Byron. With very little evidence …
- Philip Carey (Calamity Jane, The Time Travelers) – Sheriff Vernon Bell. The competent police officer, who enlists John’s help. Like Sandy, he suspects Byron of being involved with the murders.

Adventure writer John Weatherby played by Peter Graves (Mission Impossible) is called in to investigate a series of brutal murders that has investigators confused. The clues are not clear and leave no clear trail. The tracks left at the murder site appear to be that of a wolf a man or both! Lost in his search for answers Weatherby contacts his old friend Bryon played by Clint Walker a mysterious hunter and a recluse to help him track this unknown killer. His friend is not much help but may know more than he’s willing to say.
