Buy from Amazon It’s coronation day for the four Jewel Princesses, but where is Princess Roxanne? It seems the young Princess fears the responsibilities and loss of freedom inherent in ruling a kingdom, so she’s run away. Faithful servant Twitter follows the Princess and, when she cannot be persuaded to return to the castle, promises to accompany her. The pair is soon set upon by the evil Darklings, who steal the Princess’s valuable ruby necklace and then attack a goldsmith and his wife on their way to the coronation. Ever the compassionate soul, the Princess stops to help the couple and they, in turn, lead the Princess to realize that her keen ear and kind heart are qualities destined to make her a great leader. When the foursome discover the Darklings’ plot to dupe the King and Queen into crowning an impostor, it’s up to the Princess to recover her ruby necklace and stop the coronation.

Here’s today’s trivia question: What Disney movie costars both colonels from television’s M*A*S*H–that is, Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) and Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan)? Heck, that’s easy: 1978’s The Cat from Outer Space, a family comedy about a feline extraterrestrial named Jake (voiced by actor Ronnie Schell, who also plays Sergeant Duffy). Eerily similar to the plot of Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, released four years later, Cat finds Jake stuck on Earth and in danger of being trapped here forever if his fellow space kitties can’t rendezvous with him soon.

 When Andy, brother of a Yugoslavian soccer hero, brings Gus, a field goal-kicking mule, to the United States as halftime entertainment for a losing Atoms football team, laughs and lasting fame follow. Gus’s intelligent, almost human interactions with his Yugoslavian ball holder and the devious duo intent on stifling Andy and Gus’s success are amusing and entertaining. An extended mule chase through a busy supermarket and Gus’s drunken acceptance of an award on “Gus Day” are only two examples of the slapstick comedy that pervades this 97-minute film. Talents Edward Asner, Don Knotts, Tim Conway, Gary Grimes, Dick Enberg, and Tom Bosley enliven the somewhat predictable plot of this 1976 Disney film. Enter a spoiled rich boy named Bartleby who wants Air Bud as a birthday present, a dim-witted cousin, and a doltish thug employed by Bartleby’s father, and mayhem prevails as Buddy and Molly get dog-napped and Noah, Henry, and the runway puppies all set out to rescue them. As the chase winds over the river, through the woods, to the drive-in movie, and straight through the farmyard, slapstick comedy and satire reign and the whole gang learns an important lesson about the value of teamwork, love, and courage. While children ages 3 to 10 will delight in the capers of these cute talking puppies, most adults will find the plot predictable and the action less than riveting.
