Song lyrics to Blues in the Night (1941). Music by Harold Arlen, Lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Performed by John Garfield in Thank Your Lucky Stars

My mama done told me when I was in knee-pants
My mama done told me, she said Son
A woman will sweet-talk ya, she’ll give you the big eye
But when that sweet talkin’ is done
A woman’s a two-face, a worrisome thing
Who’ll leave ya to sing the blues in the night

You’ll never know if an apple is ripe, ‘til you bite it
You’ll never know if a fire is gonna burn, ‘til you light it
You’ll never know what it means to be blue, ‘til you’ve lost an old friend
You’ll never know how long is your road, ‘til you’ve reached the end.
