Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949) starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Esther Williams, Betty Garrett

Synopsis of Take Me Out to the Ball Game

In Take Me Out to the Ball Game, Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly play early-1900s vaudevillians who are also professional baseball players. But a new female owner adds complications, as does a gambler who wants to make sure their team loses!

Cast of characters

  • Frank Sinatra (High Society, The Manchurian Candidate) … Dennis Ryan. The kind young man, clearly following Eddie’s lead. Most of the time. Until he meets K.C., at least.
  • Esther Williams (Neptune’s Daughter, Texas Carnival) … K.C. Higgins. The beautiful young woman, who’s just inherited the Wolves baseball team. The male players all think she’s all fluff and no brains …. Until she (correctly) fixes some of the professional ballplayers mistakes and issues! She’s more than competent, and Dennis is love-sick for her. Unknown to him, his pal Eddie is seriously pursuing her.
  • Gene Kelly (The Pirate, An American in Paris) … Eddie O’Brien. Handsome, athletic, and overconfident. He’s very good both as a vaudevillian and a baseball player, and can’t choose between them. When Morgan’s scheme has him spending half the night “rehearsing” for a new show, it impacts his baseball, and nearly costs the wolves their shot at the pennant.
  • Betty Garrett (DuBarry Was A Lady, On the Town) … Shirley Delwyn. Young lady, who’s set her eye on Dennis. And pursues him with vigor! There’s a funny scene where she literally picks him up and carries him in the stadium!
  • Edward Arnold (You Can’t Take It With You) … Joe Lorgan. The unscrupulous gambler, who tricks Eddie into spending his nights rehearsing for a (fictional) new show. So his performance goes downhill, and the favorite Wolves being losing …
  • Jules Munshin (Kiss Me Kate, Silk Stockings) … Nat Goldberg. The third member of Ryan, O’Brien, and Goldberg. A very funny performance.
  • Richard Lane (Meet Boston Black) … Michael Gilhuly
  • Tom Dugan (Wife Versus Secretary, The Monster and the Girl) … Slappy Burke

Product Description

Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly and Esther Williams find romance, gangsters and lots of song and dance on the baseball diamond in the fast-paced, fun-filled musical romp Take Me Out to the Ball Game. 1906. The champion ball club The Wolves’ success depends on the powerhouse double play combination of O’Brien to Ryan to Goldberg. Trouble is O’Brien (Kelly–An American in Paris, Brigadoon) and Ryan (Academy Award winner Sinatra–From Here to Eternity, Pal Joey) would rather be pursuing their vaudeville career than playing baseball . . . that is until the team gets a new owner, beautiful K.C. Higgins (Williams–Dangerous When Wet). And when a professional gambler who has bet heavily against The Wolves tries every dirty trick he knows to influence the outcome of the big game, it’s the baseball players against the gangsters for a wild, hysterical, musical nine innings.
