Synopsis of Harvey
James Stewart gives one of his finest performances in this lighthearted film as the good-natured Elwood P. Dowd. His constant companion is Harvey, a six-foot tall rabbit that only he can see. To his sister, Veta Louise, Elwood’s obsession with Harvey has been a thorn in the side of her plans to marry off her daughter. But when Veta Louise decides to put Elwood in a mental hospital, a hilarious mix-up occurs and she finds herself committed instead. It’s up to Elwood to straighten out the mess with his kindly philosophy, and his “imaginary” friend, in this popular classic.

A fictionalized biography of composer Jerome Kern, that begins with a short version of his famous Show Boat musical, with much of his life told in flashback, including his partnership with Oscar Hammerstein. It’s historical accuracy is poor, but Till the Clouds Roll By makes up for it with numerous musical numbers by the great singers of the day.

I’ve often said that Hollywood takes enormous liberties with biographies. That’s true in The Adventures of Mark Twain as well. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not a very enjoyable movie. It is, for a variety of reasons. It has a good pacing, interesting cinematography, and a compelling rags-to-riches story.
