Best Foot Forward (1943), starring Lucille Ball, Harry James

A fun musical, that frequently had me asking, “When is Lucy coming back on screen?” Please understand, that even without Lucy on screen, it’s a fun musical farce.  There are several nice musical numbers and some Wonderful music by the Harry James band.  I was absolutely transfixed by their rendition of Flight of the Bumblebees.  But there’s a definite decrease in the comedy, and in the pace of the film, when Lucille Ball is off-screen. With a few notable examples.

Song lyrics to Oh, by Jingo – words by Lew Brown, music by Al Von Tilzer

Performed on the I Love Lucy episode, Mertz and Kurtz

In the land of San Domingo
Lived a girl called Oh By Jingo
From the fields and from the marshes
Came the young and oh by goshes
They all spoke with a different lingo
But they all loved Oh By Jingo
and every night, they sang in the pale moonlight
Oh by gee by gosh by gum by Jove
Oh By Jingo won’t you hear our love
We will build for you a hut
You will be our favorite nut
We will have a lot of little Oh By Gollies
And we’ll put them in the follies

If you’re ever in a jam, here I am
If you’re ever in a mess, S-O-S
If you ever feel so happy, you land in jail; I’m your bail.
It’s friendship, friendship, just a perfect blendship.
When other friendships have been forgot,
Ours will still be hot.
Lah-dle-ah-dle-ah-dle dig, dig, dig.

Song lyrics to Sweet Adeline, sung on the I Love Lucy episode Lucy’s Show Biz Swan Song, Monkey Business, and many more places

[Sweet Adeline was first published in 1903, with lyrics by Richard H. Gerard to music by Harry Armstrong, from a tune he had written in 1896]

Cut this picture into you and me
Burn it backwards, kill this history
Make it over, make it stay away
Or hate’ll say the ending that love started to stay

There’s No Business Like Show Business – performed in Annie Get Your Your GunThere’s No Business Like Show Business, the I Love Lucy episode Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined (as well as a great many other places).  Written by Irving Berlin.

There’s no business like show business like no business I know
Everything about it is appealing, everything that traffic will allow
Nowhere could you get that happy feeling when you are stealing that extra bow
