The motive of course is money, she wants the cash and he wants a new research laboratory. Promoted as a horror film, but it’s actually more along the lines of a Gothic thriller.   • Boris Karloff’s third feature in Britain, filmed April 25-June 6 1936, quickly following “The Man Who Lived Again (1936).” He returned to Hollywood to shoot “Charlie Chan at the Opera (1936).”

Cast

  • Boris Karloff (The Body Snatcher; Frankenstein 1931) as Dr. Victor Sartorius. The brilliant, amoral research scientist. He’s willing to murder the elderly Mr. Clifford, in exchange for a large ‘donation’ from his widow to fund his research.
  • Joan Wyndham (The Fortunate Fool) as Nurse Eve Rowe. Dr. Sartorius’ new nurse. She’s intelligent and observant, and begins to put 2 and 2 together, to realize that her employer may be a murderer … The protagonist of the film.
  • Arthur Margetson (Sherlock Holmes Faces Death) as Roger Clifford. The wealthy elderly man who realizes that his wife may be planning something. And so makes his son in charge of his estate. So that her scheming is for nothing! Unless the son dies as well …
