Secondhand Lions is one of the truly great films. It’s about a young man, bonding with his cantankerous uncles. And learning that there’s much more to them …
Hub: Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil; and I want you to remember this, that love… true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in.
Secondhand Lions (2003) starring Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Haley Joel Osment
I absolutely love Secondhand Lions. It’s literally one of the best movies ever made. It’s the story of a young man named Walter. He’s dropped off by his … unreliable … mother, to stay with his two uncles, while she allegedly goes to court reporting school. Two men he doesn’t know, and who don’t know him.
To call the two brothers “eccentric” is an understatement. Rumors abound about their rumored wealth, and how they got it. But bit by bit, he hears the story of their life from one of the uncles. And, he begins to bond with the two elderly bachelors.
Then, the bored older men literally buy a secondhand lion to hunt! But she becomes part of the family. And even begins to treat Walter as her cub. Until …
From the manufacturer
This comedic and touching family film follows the adventures of a shy young boy who is sent to spend the summer with his eccentric uncles. At first shocked by his uncles’ unconventional behavior that includes ordering African lions through the mail, the boy soon becomes enthralled with unraveling the mystery that has followed the uncles for years. Hearing tales of their exotic adventures involving kidnapped princesses, Arabian sheiks and lost treasure, not only brings him closer to his uncles but also teaches him what it means to believe in something… whether it’s true or not.
Secondhand Lions (DVD) (WS/FS)
Over one unpredictable Central Texas summer in the early 1960s, everything in the lives of a family of strangers is about to change forever… For 14-year old Walter (Haley Joel Osment), his great uncles’ farm in rural Texas is the last place on earth he wants to spend the summer. Eccentric and gruff Hub and Garth McCaan (Robert Duvall and Michael Caine) are rumored to have been bank robbers, mafia hit men and/or war criminals in their younger days. But little by little, through stories spun against a backdrop of the dusty Texas night, an amazing tale comes to life via Walter’s vivid, colorful imaginings–a tale set in a long-ago exotic, mysterious place where men rode stallions and fought with swords; where beautiful princesses tangled with treacherous sheiks; and where the two unlikely heroes lived an adventure of which most people only dream.
